School Visits

Looking to bring an author to your school? Each year, Kate offers a limited number of FREE visits to help schools spark excitement for reading and writing. Explore her presentation options, or contact her to tailor a visit to meet your school’s unique needs.

Option 1: How a Book Becomes a Book
Audience: 3rd - 5th grade

Most popular visit! Using Kate’s nonfiction picture book, CHEETAHS RETURN TO INDIA: THE TRUE STORY OF AASHA AND PAVAN, this cheetah-filled school visit includes:

      

  • The writing process – from inspiration to publication

  • Book reading

  • Photos and discussion of the real cheetahs 

  • Interactive cheetah trivia

Option 2: Magazine Exploration
Audience: Tailored for kindergarten - 8th grade

Structured around children’s magazines, these visits are a joyful celebration of reading and writing.

During the visit, students will be able to: 

  • Enjoy hands-on exploration of magazines 

  • Identify different forms of writing including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, recipes, and crafts 

  • Describe the role of editor, author, and illustrator 

  • Discuss the steps of writing from idea to publication 

  • Compare the content of magazines and books 

Option 3: Writing for Publication
Audience: High School - Adults

Option 4: When Scribbles Come
Audience: Christian or Catholic Schools, PreK - 2nd Grade

This visit uses Kate’s award-winning picture book, WHEN GOD MAKES SCRIBBLES BEAUTIFUL. This book explores themes of grief, hope, and helping others. We all go through hard times, so let’s talk about it!

In this visit, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Discuss hardships students might face 

  • Identify the main character’s feelings 

  • Strategize ideas to acknowledge and manage emotions 

  • Explore how the Bible offers comfort and counsel 

  • Think about ways we can help others who are going through hard times 

Kate has published six children’s books, a dozen anthology pieces, and nearly a hundred magazine stories and articles. Using examples from her own publishing experience, Kate will help participants:

  • Explore the physical the form of magazines and books across age categories

  • Review basic story elements

  • Discuss writing to specifications

  • Learn about the publishing process and key professionals involved 

  • Examine the elements of a book proposal 

  • Consider submission opportunities
